Firework Safety: Avoiding Serious Injuries at Home

By July 17, 2012April 14th, 2022No Comments

Although the nation’s birthday has passed, many people continued the celebration into the weekend and beyond. If your family used fireworks in the backyard, it is crucial that everyone followed safety precautions. What if an explosive took its own course, causing a serious injury or damage to your home? This may result in extreme financial loss, and you don’t want to experience that sort of devastation. Therefore, you require the support of Michigan home insurance so the celebration can continue safely.

Fireworks today are safer than ever before, but accidents still occur each year due to irresponsible behavior. This was the case for one resident who decided to make his own homemade fireworks. Using a paper towel tube and black powder, an Illinois man tried to light the firework, but the plan backfired and exploded. He was flown to Bronson Methodist Hospital’s burn unit after he suffered burns to his body, right arm, and hand. According to the National Council of Firework Safety, most injuries and accidents could be eliminated if basic safety steps are taken. The council offers these tips for using fireworks at home in the hopes that injuries can be greatly reduced this season:

• Never make or light homemade fireworks.
• Parents should not allow young children to handle or use fireworks.
• Fireworks should only be used outdoors.
• Read the caution label before igniting a firework.
• Obey local laws. If fireworks are not legal where you live, do not use them.
• Never ever mix alcohol and fireworks.
• Wear safety glasses whenever using fireworks.
• Soak used fireworks with water before placing them in an outdoor garbage can.
